HCMC entertainment spots could be fire death traps: police

Some of Ho Chi Minh City’s most popular entertainment venues violated fire safety regulations, an inspection by city police revealed Wednesday.


The city Department of Fire Prevention and Fighting Police found 151 violations after inspecting 55 bars, dance halls, theaters and cinemas in 11 downtown and outlying districts.

The violations related to narrow or no exits, ineffective and inadequate firefighting tools, and unsafe electrical devices.

At several bars, there was evidence of burning incense sticks and fire extinguishers stashed in boxes out of easy reach, the police said.

The dimly lit bars were small but often packed with people, had narrow exits and inflammable decorations that could give off toxic smoke if burnt, the department said.

Tran Thanh Chau, the department deputy head, said the bars used high wattage amplifiers and other devices that could easily short out and cause fires.

“Some of the owners are aware of the danger but won’t fix it as they don’t want to spend more money,” Chau said.

Music at a 100 square meter first floor bar on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street was so loud that nobody would be able to hear the fire alarm and one set of stairs provided the only fire escape, police said.

The department suspended Caesar dance hall at An Dong Market in District 5 during the investigation, after fining it VND21 million (US$1,200).

The hall’s fire exit was usually blocked, a department officer said adding that a fire would cause a large death toll and extensive damage with employees alone at the club numbering around 200.

Diamond Cinema was fined VND5 million ($287), Megastar Hung Vuong Plaza VND2 million ($115), and Galaxy Nguyen Du and Hoa Binh Theater VND600,000 ($34) each.

The whole of HCMC is a fire trap. I have been here for 3 years and I have seen ONLY 1 external fire escape route on a building about 6 stories high.

If you want to know then just do a google search for "sex viet". I know one website that used to be popular, but it got closed down by the authority. I have been back to HCMC a few times, but not this year because I'll be heading to Malaysia instead; need to save money :D.

Times around tet were not fun for me because mostly everywhere was closed and my wallet got very thin for giving away "li xi". But it's ok if you have someone to be there with you and have sexy times.

The call for help for teachers on Tet by Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan has had a great response, with VND1.9 billion ($120,000) contributed by businesses and individuals in the past two days.

The military telecom corporation, Viettel, offered VND600 million to teachers in five Central Highlands provinces – Lam Dong, Kon Tum, Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Gia Lai – and seven other provinces, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Bac Giang, Phu Yen, Quang Ngai, Quang Nam and Binh Dinh.

The Vietnam Oil and Gas Group has given VND500 million to ten provinces: Phu Tho, Ninh Thuan, Tay Ninh, Dong Thap, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, An Giang and Ca Mau.

Another VND500 million also went to ten provinces: Dien Bien, Son La, Lai Chau, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Hoa Binh.

Notably, Mr. Le Van Kiem, a veteran and a Labor Hero, has donated VND300 million to six provinces: Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Binh Thuan, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Tri and Quang Binh.

Well, if the girl or the family is nice, they won't ask you for it. But, still, they might not be pleased inside if you don't give. If they are poorer than you then they might expect something, since you are the boyfriend and from a wealthier background than them. Just don't come and greet them empty handed, especially during tet. A gift basket wrapped with goodies is OK, I guess. And be prepared for some red packets for the children at least.

This is what I have to put up with when I go visit my relatives in vietnam.
