I'd think twice about doing this as it does involve a bit ofsubterfuge ie reporting card lost etc.

If the "merchant" maintains that the charges are genuine and insists on getting paid, the card company will need to investigate further and probably involve the LE.

Think about it, if this works, how many people will use this ploy to get products/services ... And then not pay for it.

Best to be lily white when dealing with such matters.

Just IMHO of course

total damage 60,000 RMB for 3 person. Costly lessons.

years ago same thing happened to me while i was in zhengzhou henan
the gangsters then followed me to the nearest atm machine
i was cornered alone at night, what i did was keep pressing the wrong pin and selected english instead of chinese on the atm screen
in the end i agve them only cash 3000 rmb and told them or lied to them i had maxed out my credit card, they accepted my offer, took 3000 rmb and left
last year i was also legally '' robbed'' by the mongolian goverment
every year the china-mongolian border is closed 3 days for the mongolian national day, but last year last minute the mongolian goverment last minute informed the china side they will close the border another further 2 days
as a result many foreigners doing visa runs had problems as their china visas
had ''overstayed'' because of the extra 2 days border closure
as a result the china side fined a record number of foreigners in china for overstaying their visas for 1 to 2 days
a total of 10 amercians, 15 british, 30 germans and others were fined sums from 500 rmb to 1500 rmb each
it smells fishy to me, it was obviously a conspiracy by the mongolian and china governments to legally ''rob'' foreigners's money in china
never trust the mongolians, they are bullshit people:mad:

Dear bro lky,

just checking with you, your friends kena at Ren Ming Guang Chang when they being approach by a gal?
Later the gal brought them to a place where the gal told them that each gal tips around RMB 300??

I kena this at Ren Ming Guang Chang, the gal brought me to a building quite close around 10mins walk then proceed to 7th floor. Once I step out from the lift, it was a KTV set up. the gal brought me to a ktv room then mummy pop up, told me the charges for the room / drink bla bla....standard SOP.

I did have some good time & manage to get 1 pop from the gal, dmg for the gal is RMB800, then tips for mummy 200. When I told them bill please....
a waitress brought in 9 glasses of hard liq & 2 can of cokes.

then the waitree auto blend this liq with coke, 2 gentle man came in & told me total bill was 3000RMB. I told them i dont hv much (only left about 1800) & they pull out my wallet try to swipe my cards but all fails.

at the end they LL just let go.

I've been to China a few times (and was honestly scared for my safety the first time) but everyone I've spoken has mentioned that the Chinese will scam and steal money but will almost never harm a tourist/foreigner. Apparently the Chinese Government won't tolerate harm to tourist/foreigners so it's kinda in the scammers' best interests to avoid it.

I'm not sure how true it is but I kinda think it might be right that their threads are probably bullshit.

Without direct experience I think credit card fraud is actually very easy and probably hurts the merchants more than anyone. However, I believe that credit card chargebacks are recorded on your credit file so it's probably obvious if you're abusing the chargeback system.

I'd imagine the best thing to do is to file a police report and attempt a chargeback from the credit card company. Extortion probably constitutes a fraudulent transaction and it should probably be pretty damn obvious given that a legitimate KTV shouldn't cost ~60,000 RMB for 3 people?

But really. If the KTV people followed your friends to the hotel why didn't they just take your friends to an ATM and make them withdraw?

Yeap a gal spoke english and led the guys to the place and subsequently the extortion and intimidation occurred for services/drinks that never occurred in the first place. It is not even payment under duress, it was robbery.

the gangster landed a punch to one of the guy, albeit a soft 1 though, but definitely still had serious reasons to believe that harm would have been done if we did not follow what they told us to do.

definitely the payment under extortion will be disputed

This remind me of an incident that a sillyporean reported that he was extorted in china by someone which " Wanted to show him some electronic stuff in BACK LANE " ............

Obviously he is going to BBS to view mms but somehow bad things happen to him and maybe he need to make up story to settle his CEO/CFO ......

Just play or party with care ... be it you are tourist , local or even "Ground Head Snake " . Never under estimate what will happen and take all things for granted .

Have fun !

What I meant was, Heidian(s) are out to get one's money, they will abuse, verbal abuse, hammer, threaten, escort etc., and in the case of Shanghai, most these people (but not all, bosses probably got some friends/relatives/connection with the local authorities) comes from outside provinces. Their motives are the money and not after one's life, but one must also understand life is cheap in China, comes with a value and it is a very Big Country with a different culture, therefore sometimes reaction can be extreme or out of control.

Local Authorities/Gong An etc. are very lazy cum inefficient (but not all, some are really good), and they received tonnes of such complaints everyday, so you can bet that they will push your case around until Christmas arrived!

Do not and never use the SGP way of thinking to apply to the Chinese Context, it does not work here in China.

Most important everyone is safe and soundly left Ah Tiong Land. Be careful everywhere we go, not only in China, and even with recommendations from Bros here, also be careful (sorry to say, but no offence meant, some are also out to make some bucks out of fellow citizens), therefore have your own judgement, spend within your budget, and come and leave safely.
