A newbie SHOULD NOT attempt to bargain without knowing what is the appropriate price, or worse pretending to be a veteran. It's like a small fish dancing in front of the jaws of the shark trying to negotiate a common meal.
Take a BB taxi, or simply tell straight the first driver who offers you his service that you are going to pay 50k (hard bargainers will try 40k) BEFORE entering the car. In case he refuses (unlikely), you can try with a different one.

The taxi takes 10 mins. On foot, it's maybe 30 mins.

Very easy if you know the way, an adventure for a newbie.
Be sure you have Google Maps with the local map preloaded for offline usage, or you will get lost 100% probability. (I am not sure how confident and safe a newbie could feel, first time in Batam, with a smartphone in hands and "Hello I am tourist I am getting lost" read by everyone on his face).

Considering the hot weather, I think it's worth to pay 5 SGD (50k) for a taxi, if you have luggage, or 2 SGD (20k) or less for an ojek right out the toll barrier.
