Hiring a car from a non official agency, borrowing a car from a "friend", driving the car of someone else...

I would NEVER do that in Batam*, in absence of an insurance for the car I drive, and especially in absence of an insurance of many cars and bikes driving around me.
What happens in case of incident? Who pays the damage to the car you are driving? to the car which you have hit (in case)? If there is people injured? Or DEAD??
* Yes, I admit I did that, but only in few cases (for example, driving a bike back from Pacific to Formosa with a drunk girl on the back, that is the legitimate owner of the bike, who was really not able to drive)
