I take my taxi from the
checkin entrance of Harbour Bay. This avoids those aggressive drivers who are waiting for people just arrived from ferry.
The reason why I do that, actually, is not about drivers: the first thing I do when I arrive is to checkin for my return, so that I am sure to have a seat at the time I need and I have boarding pass ready (I am always in hurry on my last day).
I step out with my luggage and someone immediately asks me "taxi?".
While we load luggage on car I am sure to confirm "50k ok?" with the driver. I always get back a smile and "okkkkk!!".
Indonesian are always very chatty. Asking "where you going?" is like saying "hello", not perceived as an intrusion into our privacy.
Sooner or later, the question "ladies???" comes, but I stop it with "Banyak cewek. Teman. Saya banyak kali di Batam". I am not sure that is a good Indonesian, but it is very effective to stop immediately the offering for services.
About the rest, I don't mind talking about anything with my limited words of Bahasa with the driver during the 10 minutes from HB to Formosa. I am on holiday. The local folks are part of the scene.
