I've been taking either Grab Car or GoCar frequently in Batam and Semarang, never encounter any problem. Basically all local Grab and Gojek drivers know very well where can pick up passengers and where can't, so if you try to book a private car on these platform and no driver accept your booking or driver cancel booking before arriving your pick-up location, that mean that the location is control by taxi cartel. The driver who pick up passengers at these locations will get into trouble, not passengers. Generally, you can take private hire car at any hotel in Batam, locations which are control by taxi cartel are airport, seaports and some shopping malls. Fare charge by regular taxi is several times higher than private hire car. Regular taxi can charge RP100,000 for the trip from Nogaya Hill Mall to Planet Holiday while private hire car only charge RP17,000.
