In Batam, have not encountered such stuff as khalwat but have been warned by my GF to stay away from some smaller hotels near batam centre before as they are stricter and more family focused. Most hotels mentioned here by bros have no such issue so far. Unless you guys go to places like aceh, then this should be big issue there.
As for those co concerned about their new phones, was told by a chinese guy at the stall beside the money changer in harbourbay that as long as purchase for the 100k card, they can register for free, but 1 card for 1 phone registration only. Also the registration can only be done in seaport or airport counters, other place will not be able to do so. Hope these info helps.
