i've been to batam now 5 times on my own. i'm a westerner living in kl and travel often to jb. batam is quite easy to get around and i've never felt threatened or in any way uncomfortable. i've gone solo every time so far though a few times i have hooked up with malaysians or singaporeans for nightlife.
a tip to orang puteh like myself, find a taxi driver that speaks decent english and ask him to take you to places that have nice girls that also speak some english.
i like the panorama regency because the wifi connection is strong and quite fast. the hotel is clean, great staff and good breakfast. Also in a good location for Nagoya.
