Well, if the girl or the family is nice, they won't ask you for it. But, still, they might not be pleased inside if you don't give. If they are poorer than you then they might expect something, since you are the boyfriend and from a wealthier background than them. Just don't come and greet them empty handed, especially during tet. A gift basket wrapped with goodies is OK, I guess. And be prepared for some red packets for the children at least.
This is what I have to put up with when I go visit my relatives in vietnam.
Enjoy your stay. Should be fun if the girl can take you to places with her scooter. If you are brave then use the scooter yourself, not that hard. Just be careful and not cause an accident or run into cops.
