Anything above US$7,000(or other currency equivalents) need to be declared.
Bringing cash to Vietnam is no problem, as long as you declared the amount
in your custom declaration form; even more than US$40k. The custom officer
will bring you to a small room, and ask you to show him the money. He will count them( or use a ruler to measure

) in front of you. And, if the amount is correct, he will stamp your custom declaration form to verify the amount.
It means you can only bring out no more than the declared amount, if you decide to bring your money out of Vietnam again.
