Thanh Nien closes its English language daily edition
VietNamNet Bridge - Thanh Nien Daily News announced on August 22 that economic difficulties have forced the discontinuation of its print edition after two years of publication.
VietNamNet Bridge has huge respect for the HCM City-based Thanh Nien newspaper; respect that’s easily seen by the large number of articles that we select from its pages to translate and present on our own website.
We’ve also had high regard for the Thanh Nien Daily News, Thanh Nien’s two year-old English edition. In the quest to present a vibrant mix of breaking news and insightful, objective reporting on Vietnam’s society and economy, TN Daily has been the best of competitors – a journal that set its own standards high and inspired us to try harder ourselves.
Thus we were sad to learn that Thanh Nien has decided to convert its English language daily into a weekly, citing difficulties caused by the global recession. Its online English edition is still going strong.
TN Daily’s demise leaves only one seven day each week print newspaper in English, Vietnam News, which is published by the official Vietnam News Agency. Also online, also publishing in English 24/7 year-round, there is us - VietNamNet Bridge, the English language younger sibling of VietNamNet, the nation’s first on-line newspaper.
Keep an eye on *VietNamNet Bridge* in the months ahead. We’re going to be doing our level best to develop further the high standard of journalistic objectivity and heads-up reportage on Vietnamese topics that has beencharacteristic of Thanh Nien Daily and which has been our aim as well.
