I have the same language problem when I intially met my gf. I could not speak tieng Viet and she couldn't speak Mandarin or English. Luckily one of my friend's wife is from VN. During the initial period, I depend heavily on my friend and his wife to translate her sms as well as sending mine. Tired Goggle Translations and it works only word for word but makes no sense in a sentence.
The following months I took great pains trying to pick up the language and bought dictionary and books and the same goes to my gf. Right now my tieng Viet is still lousy but we can communicate now without much problem.
If you love her deep enough, I think learning the language shouldn't be the biggest obstacle. At least that's my driving force to learn the language.
