Somebody has to stay sober. You don't want to be dumped on the side of the road dead drunk ... not a pretty sight be it you're a man or woman. Past experience says if one gets drunk, it puts a damper on those who have to chaperone and they end the party early. So best to just drink enough and you just stop. Or no alcohol for that girl friend.
