I hope to put some light to the herpes picture....

1) yes, herpes simplex virus is an STD and is transmitted by sexual contact.

2) blood test to confirm recent infection by herpes virus....i don't think so.....the blood test ONLY tells you that you have the antibody to both the strains of virus but DOES NOT confirm a recent episode or infection of herpes simplex.

3) The diagnosis of Herpes Simplex as an STD is at most times based on the clinical picture.....the site of infection, usually yhe groin area is intensely itchy and painful for a couple of days before a rash breaks out, like small blisters, with surrounding redness below it and around it. These blisters may rupture or burst and subsequently you may be left with painful ulcers at that area.

4) It is however true that it can be contagious and can spread to your partners.
