I am not sure if there will be traffic jams because the roads are very wide and at least 2 to 3 lanes. If there are road blocks, then most probably will have jams.

As for death toll, travelling on a bus shoud be quite safe. I am not sure what is the speed limit on those highways as there is no speed limit sign. But most people are driving at least 110km/hr and above.

i'm planning to go north during Songkran but not sure if the traffic will post a threat. I don't want to fly because I want to watch the scenery, something which I've never done in Thailand.
Bro, i would recommand taking the Siam First Tour Coach, more comfy. but i also suggest going and buy an advance ticket from the station because festive sure alot of people buy 1.

Songkran is the time of the year where road traffic accidents skyrocket. It would be much safer to take a flight.

why not ask your gf about appropriate gifts?
when I first visited my wife's family, I brought along red wine for which they just gobbled down like thai whiskey, LOL.
mabbe can prepare some hongbaos to give when they tie good luck strings on your wrist.

I had meant to say that the red wine that I bought for them is somewhat unappreciated. If you want to buy liquor, just buy thai whiskey or beer along the way to her house.

to give hongbaos to those more senior than you/your gf?
if give one, then give everyone who tied strings onto you.
100 to 500THB each, depending on your budget

I think try not to spend too much money on your first visit there, lest the family think you have vast spending power...

my advices to u is better not do anything just pretend dont know the culture.
just bring extra maybe 2 to 3k baht.if really give then give parent 1k baht n grandmother 500 baht good enough. it alll up to u.

everytime i go back i only give 1k baht to my dear's mother. new yr i also give the same.

if u feel like giving then ask her what she wanna give her parents.

as for liq forget it. no need buy wine, vsop blah blah if she stay in villiage pple only drink beer n rice wine lol they dont know how enjoy red wine or whiskey. just get 1 to 2 carton of beers or rice wine there can already.

yes agree best is to pretend dont know. later she ask then give ^^ but i think just give the mother 1k baht if he staying there to sleep n eat. so the mother can buy food extra to cook.
