20-ONE

KC does not contact CK for the next few days. During the day, KC deliberately keeps himself busy with work and goes out whenever he can with friends, associates, ex-colleagues and anybody with however flimsy and sorry relationships shared with him. The focus on work and activity works. At least during the day. When the night comes and KC lies staring in the silent darkness, CK's last words to him drifts into his mind and haunts him. It is a struggle to fall asleep every night.

To strengthen his resolve, KC begins to visit the very same forum website where he had stumbled on earlier by mistake. Every morning he will log in and read all the postings and referrals on the Club where CK works. Initially the process is heart-wrenching for KC as he reads all the latest postings on the bedroom skills of CK. Every detail of moans and groans and facial expression is written down and KC forces himself to read on. He forces himself to feel every stab in his heart as a way to understand the complexity of her world and how different they really are.

And through all this, CK is silent.

KC never recieves another SMS from CK anymore after the last meeting.

Three months pass by quickly in SMS silence.

Then one day, KC is scrolling down his phone list, looking for a number when he sees CK's contact under another name. He has already deleted her contact earlier but somehow his evil scheming subconcious mind has played him out and made a "back-up" copy of CK's contact in his handphone under another name.

KC looks at the contact, hesitant and not knowing what to do. He presses the SMS function button and stares at the blank screen. Then suddenly his office phone rings and startled, KC presses the "send" button, pushing out a blank SMS to CK...

Shit, KC thinks, what has he done? Quickly he erases the back-up number and answers the office line.

It is an anxious client, a "kan-cheong spider" on the line. KC talks and tries to calm the client down when suddenly his handphone buzzes. Immediate KC goes on auto-drive mode and yaks automatically on the line while grabbing his phone.

It is a SMS.

From CK.

I know it's you; missing you these past 3 months...

Huh? KC thinks, while his mouth continues to form words, sentences and phrases automatically to the client. Of curse, CK probably keeps all records of SMS so all she needs to do is to check to see the date of the last SMS entry...

Then the phone buzzes again; it is another SMS.

Also from CK.

Free to meet? Same spot?

KC thinks. Ok, no harm to see her after such a long period; should be ok. CK probably is looking for some financial help or loans.

KC textes, all the same still yakking nonsense on the phone;

Ok, see you later at 3pm?

The answer comes almost instaneously; OK!

In spite of himself, KC smiles then turns his full attention back to the phone conversation. There is silence on the client's side and KC keeps quiet; then the client finally speaks...

.... that was a....ermmm...solid lecture on the history of fast food resturants in Singapore; I dunno you so interested in A&W....OK, I think you lagi more stressed than me. I call you later to discuss this maybe tomorrow OK?.... and with that the conversation ends.

KC puts down the phone.

Then he gets up and goes to the office bathroom.

KC stares at the relection of himself and realises how haggard and old he is looking now. With a sigh he bends down, washes his face and prepares to meet CK.

As usual KC is early.

He sits quietly, not expecting anything. He is already quite tired of this relationship, which seem to go and lead nowhere.

CK appears after a while, about 10 minutes late.

KC looks at her and she smiles back. KC notices that she looks a bit apprehensive.

They sit down quietly. This time, CK is not as bubbly as the last time when they last met. In fact, there seem to be a strain and tension in the air as they both struggled for topics to talk.

CK stirs her glass of lemonade and makes a casual remark on how KC seem to be very busy lately.

Busy? KC thinks. Yeah, trying to forget you. So come on, out with it, he thinks, what's the purpose now? You need cash?

But CK keeps quiet and keeps on stirring her glass.

Finally she speaks.

CK is enrolling in a class for technical trade certificate.

Huh? KC thinks, so you need to a study loan is it?

CK keeps quiet for a while more hen says she will be changing her job soon. She looks up at him and asks if he would mind if she works in a pub as a beer gal?

KC looks at her back and shrugs his shoulders. Inside himself, he thinks, what the f**k, after what you are doing for money, what's a beer gal? A saint? But he just smiles and says , heck do whatever you want.

CK smiles and then motions that she needs to go off now.

KC stands up and accompanies her back to the club.

They are again quiet as they walked towards the club.

At the entrance, CK stops and looks up at KC.

KC think, ok, let's get on with the loan thingy....

But instead CK reaches out for KC's hand, then gently leads him into the deserted fire escape staircase...

As the escape door swings shut, she reaches out and brings KC's head down to her. KC feels his heart pounding as her mouth gently sucks and devours his. Then his arms reaches out and starts to slide gently up and down her back and she greedily locks his mouth in a tongue-fight...

This goes on for a few minutes and KC feels the blood rush into his groin. The hardness begins to creep in between his legs and KC feels the urgency swelling up within him. This is it, he thinks as he gently switches his hand and slowly slides them up her warm soft breast...

At this stage, CK suddenly breaks away from the kiss and stands back. She looks dazed but quickly gains her composure and clears her throat.

I gotta go now; the club's expecting me. She mutters and then turns around and leave.

As the escape door whizzes shut, KC sees CK turning back her head to stare at the speechless KC.

And then the door closes and shuts away the view of CK looking at him longingly...
