Re: Batam Info / Interest / Help Thread

I paid RP100,000 for Smartfren SIM Card at Batam Center upon arrival on May 6, the staff who sold me the SIM Card also activate the card for me on the spot, save all the trouble, 3 GB data, no regular phone call, only VOIP, vaild for 2 weeks. However can only work on phones bought outside Indonesia before 2020.

I have no problem getting into the Indonesian network using my cheap 5$ monthly TPG card, although connection may be poor at times. Manage to get all my Gojek bookings.

think must register the IMEI. If previously already registered in the database should be ok to use any type of sims. Can always check the indo IMEI website.

RULE FOR REGISTERING IMEI IN INDONESIA?
OCTOBER 14, 2020

Under the regulation, phones with international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) — a unique code assigned to every SIM card slot a phone has — that have not been registered in Indonesia will not be able to connect to any of the country’s cellular services.

The Ministry of Industries, one of the initiators of the regulation, has launched a page where users can enter their phone’s IMEI to see if it’s registered in the government’s database of legally approved phones.

You can use below link to check if your existing phones IMEI is registered.
https://imei.kemenperin.go.id/

Your phone’s IMEI should be available in the about section of its settings. Alternatively, you can dial *#06# to automatically bring up your phone’s IMEI.
Quote:
https://come2indonesia.com/how-to-re...-in-indonesia/
Can I still use my mobile phone in Indonesia without registering the IMEI?
The answer is yes, tourists who are going to stay less than 3 months in Indonesia, will be able to acquire a SIM card called Telkomsel PraBayar or Telkomsel Tourist Card, which will work for 3 months and it will not be necessary to register the IMEI of your phone.
Quote:
https://www.telkomsel.com/en/support...ard-activation
Welcome to SIM Card Registration Form
Before you buy tourist SIM cards, please make sure:

Your phone is not locked with your local provider’s bundling plan and is allowed to use the Indonesian network.
Prepare a photo of your passport front page with the SIM card.
Screen-capture your IMEI by accessing *#06#.
This purchase is not refundable under any circumstances.

There are certain rules to the process of registering phones that were purchased outside Indonesia. You do not have to register your phone, but keep in mind that without the registration, a local SIM card will not work on “imported” devices.

Registration of IMEI phone for short stay
In case your stay in Indonesia is less than 90 days, you can register your phone at any official office of a mobile operator. To register, you just need to come to the office in person with your passport and the phone. The tax in that case does not need to be paid.

A “Tourist” registration is valid for 3 months and at the moment is permitted to be extended without any additional fees for another 3 months at the same office where you had initially registered your phone.

There are a few mobile phone shops that would register phones for free when you purchase a SIM card or an Internet package from them.

Maybe you can help do a simple test to see if any of your existing phones IMEI is registered?

I just checked, none of my phone is registered. However i can use my Samsung S10 with Smartfren even the IMEI was not registered. Probably the staff who sell the SIM cards at Batam Center has somehow activate it. ( as i have handed my Samsung S10 to the staff to insert the new Smartfren card and get it activated). I've also try to insert the same SIM card into both my Samsung A12 abd A22, none can work. I don't know how the staff at Batam Center get my S10 connected to Smartfren network. Maybe she has registered for me using her ID details, but only for 14 days ( as the Smartfren SIM card only valid for 14 days start from May 6). My cewek told me that the SIM card i bought at Batam Center only cost RP40,000 at Tg Balai, but I paid RP100,000, so the RP60,000 may be going for her kopi money to get the SIM card work on my phone. Probably it would be more worthwhile for frequent travelers to buy a cheap phone there or maybe buy a mobile WiFi router (I don't know is all WiFi router work on Indonesia SIM Card or not)

Good to see restrictions are lifted.

For bros who visited Batam recently, did you know if Delta Spa is open?

Re: Batam Info / Interest / Help Thread

Heard from the money changer in ViVoCity that Batam Ferry from HarbourFront to Batam Centre will commence from Wednesday 25th May onwards.

Hopefully that is true....

That will be good news if harbour front reopen. Hopefully the ferry rate will also go back to precovid rates. Shorter trip too.

i am also curious how the technology behind work. when you inserted the new Smartfren sim into the 2 "non-working" phones, did you check and setup the APN settings? APN is required to access data service.

Also is the "working" and 2 "non-working" phones displaying VOLTE? This VOLTE is required to "turn ON" for certain phones in order to call/text using the sim that need VOLTE.

For example, SIMBA aka TPG in sg need VOLTE turn on in order to call/text. Phones without VOLTE "turn ON" or have the feature by default will need to download telco apps in order to use VOLTE service to make call/text.

Quote:
https://prepaid-data-sim-card.fandom...d_availability
So far, for tourists who wish to skip this registration, the only option is to use special tourist offers with fixed-validity SIMs; unfortunately, the [B]selection is limited (only Telkomsel, IM3-Ooredoo, and Smartfren) and validity periods are short (10 days with IM3-Ooredoo, 14 days for the others).

Expect to pay at least Rp100,000 now for the SIM card without data or restricted data like for social media only. More and more reseller stores are able to register foreigners, but still charge a higher premium than anywhere else in Indonesia.

Smartfren's coverage is on the islands of Java and Bali, parts of Sumatra, Sulawesi, Lombok and Kalimantan. It started 4G/LTE in 25 centers so far (coverage map) and reaches 188 cities in 2016.

They launched 4G/LTE SIM cards in 2015. Be aware that you don't have any coverage outside of their 4G/LTE. Voice & text require phones supporting VoLTE or installing Smartfren's own app. The app doesn't work well with dual sim card, and doesn't work when you're connected to wifi. Be aware that initial activation will require texting, so even if you don't think you'll want calling/texting, you'll need VoLTE/installing the app for activation. Furthermore, in any case, you need to check if your device covers at least one of their LTE bands.
ps.

Additional infos. Hope the info can be useful to bros going to batam.

7. Is my mobile device supported for roaming?
VoLTE capable handsets supported by our network are listed here. Please ensure that data roaming settings are enabled in your handset.

While roaming on a VoLTE supported roaming network, you will be able to make and receive calls while roaming. Otherwise, download TPG 4G Voice app from Google Play or App Store to make and receive voice calls. Currently, TPG 4G Voice App can only be used in 7 destinations: Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, India, Japan, Taiwan.

3. How to be roam ready with TPG?
To be roam ready, please ensure that your TPG SIM is slotted into your mobile device at least 48 hours before departure. This allows your SIM to be updated with the latest parameters. To check if your SIM is roaming ready, SMS TPG to 1218.

On device settings, please ensure the following:

Data settings: Turn on Data Roaming.
Network selection: set to Automatic
APN settings: Key in TPG to Name and APN

I've 3 phones using 4 different local SIM cards, Samsung S10 is the only phone which i use TPG SIM card and with TPG voice installed. My other 2 phones Samsung A12 and A22 are newer than S10, should also support VOIP which i use Zero 1, Singtel & Circlecare, however both A12 and A22 can't work with Smartfren SIM card. Even my TPG card ($10 50GB plan) also can't connect to internet at Batam. Fortunately i'm in hotel room most of the time which can access to free WiFi.
