LionsXII go top with win over Negeri Sembilan The Lions climbed abv Kelantan 2 the top of the Malaysian Super League aft a strong away performance against a depleted Negeri Sembilan side. Goals fr Safuwan Bahrudin, Khairul Nizam, Shahril Ishak & Shahdan Sulaiman gave the Lions a 4-2 victory in Negeri Sembilan. Hosts Negeri Sembilan sorely missed star striker Jean-Emmanuel Effa Owona & struggled 2 break down the Lions. The game started slowly with both teams finding it tough 2 play their regular passing game on the water-logged pitch. The host began 2 impose themselves in the middle & were winning freekicks in dangerous positions but hardly troubled keeper Hyrul. The Lions slowly grew in2 the game & took the lead with their 1st attack in the 14th minute. Shahdan's freekick was cleared 4 a throw-in & the ball was played back in2 the Negeri box. The defence made a meal of the clearance & Safuwan blasted the ball home 2 give the visitors the lead. The Lions soon extended their lead on 20 minutes. Nizam muscled his way past the shaky Mahathvan & kept his cool 2 knock the ball past the diving Negeri keeper & tap home in2 an empty net 4 a 2-0 lead. The goal sparked live in2 Negeri & they attacked the Lions in numbers. The Lions struggled 2 cope with the physical threat of Shukor & Shahril & were shaky in defence. Negeri pulled a goal back on 32 minutes aft a succession of corners. Hyrul fumbled Fiqri's delivery & the ball fell kindly 2 Mahathevan who made no mistake fr 2 yards out. Negeri Sembilan continued 2 test the Lions defence with their long balls & set plays but the Lions defence managed 2 keep them @ bay. On 41 minutes, captain Shahril Ishak added a 3rd 4 the Lions. Mahathevan made a hash of his clearance & Shahril pounced, picking up the loose ball & calmly burying it in2 the bottom corner. Mahathevan was having a shocker of a game & was hauled of @ half-time 4 Qhairul Anwar in a tactical change. The 2nd half started with the hosts taking the game 2 the Lions. Shakir & Shukoh were a threat 4 the hosts with their trickery & physical play but could not find a way past the stubborn defence. As the half wore on, the game began 2 be stretched with both teams having chances but wasting them. On 70 mins, Shahdan got his name on the score-sheet. Shahdan expertly dummied a Shahril pass 2 Hariss Harun in the Negeri box & got 2 the end of the return pass, bundling it home 4 a 4th 4 the Lions. Both teams then made a host of substitutions as the players began 2 tire. Shukor pulled a consolation goal back 4 Negeri when he head home a corner fr Fiqri but it was 2 little 2 late. Posting on his popular Facebook page, Annuar claimed tat the LionsXII were playing in the Malaysian Super League 2 increase the gambling base of FAS principal partner, Singapore Pools, a legalised betting company. Malaysian striker Safee Sali had also expressed his concern over the matter. "It is best that those who r not directly involved with the national team not make any comments," he told the New Straits Times. The Lions started brighter of the 2 sides, working the flanks & trying 2 cause the Johor defence problems. In the 7th minute, Safuwan Baharudin who scored against Negeri last time out went close with a header but saw Johor keeper Anis Faron tip over acrobatically. As the half wore on Johor grew in confidence & the game became more even. Both teams tried 2 fashion chances but were let down by poor passing in the final 3rd. The Lions were adopting a high line & Johor came closest fr long range efforts, 1st fr Arturo & then Jabazrin. On 30 mins, the Lions had another chance with Sevki Sha'ban flicking the ball on fr a Madhu Mohana throw only 4 Safuwan to head agonizingly over. The deadlock was finally broken on 41 mins. Irwan Shah's cross fr the left was knocked down 2 Nizam by Shahril Ishak. Nizam muscled his way in2 space, held of the defenders & poked the ball home past the diving Anis 2 give the Lions the lead. The 2nd-half was a mirror reflection of the 1st with Johor taking the game 2 the Lions. Johor regrouped @ half time & came @ the Lions with numbers forcing the visitors 2 defend in numbers. The best chance 4 Johor came on 60 mins when Hyrul produced a top save fr an Arturo header tat was destined 4 the top corner. Lions coach Sundram was soon forced in2 substitutions & had 2 reshuffle his pack due 2 injury, 1st 2 Isa Halim & then 2 Safuwan. Johor's Arturo & Riduwan were combining well & kept the Lions on the back foot 4 most of the 2nd-half but they did not carve out many clear cut chances. The Lions almost snatched a 2nd when Shahdan crossed 4 Nizam on a quick counter attack & Nizam was inches away fr connecting. Fans unrest marred the end of the game when Lions captain was hurt by an object thrown fr the crowd. Shahril went down holding his head & television replays confirmed an object being thrown @ him. Shahril was stretchered off & the Lions played on with 10 men 4 the remaining mins. Johor was fimly in control & pressed in vain 4 an equaliser, but the Lions rearguard held firm & played out till the final whistle ensuring their unbeaten away run continues. Despite the hard-earned victory Lions coach Sundram will be anxiously waiting 4 medical reports on his injured stars & will be hoping they recover in time 2 face Perak on Tuesday.

Malaysia Super League Preview: LionsXII vs Perak FA A slip-up 4 Kelantan over the weekend @ Sarawak meant Kelantan now trail league leaders LionsXII by 3 points, though they still hv 2 games in hand. LionsXII meanwhile had ensured tat they were the 1s keeping the pace with a hard-fought 1-0 win over neighbours Johor. On Tuesday night they will be playing hosts 2 Norizan Bakar's Perak @ Jalan Besar Stadium. A 2-1 win earlier in the season @ Perak Stadium against a side tat looked 2 be challenging 4 the title & was labelled the best team in the league by V.Sundramoorthy, had strengthened the credentials of the fledgling team. 4 Perak, the defeat set off a run of 4 matches without a win, including 3 consecutive defeats, tat only ended last weekend with a 2-1 win against a weak Kuala Lumpur side. The poor form of 4ward Lazar Popovic has also been of concern with the Serbian looking likely 2 get the boot by the end of the transfer window. The striker woes of LionsXII meanwhile look 2 hv ended despite a string of untimely injuries. Khairul Nizam's 2nd strike in as many games on Saturday was the winning goal @ Pasir Gudang Stadium, & the 4ward has quickly eased in2 the target man cum poacher role. An injury setback earlier in the season had robbed the 4mer Courts Young Lions player of the opportunity 2 make an impact sooner but since returning & replacing the injured Sufian Annuar, Khairul has looked perfectly in sync with his team-mates. V.Sundramoorthy will be hoping 2 keep up the good form of his players with another win & extend their lead @ the top of the Malaysian Super League table, though defending champions Kelantan would by then hv 3 matches in hand.
