Chapter 83: Act Two - A Prelude Part 1

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Singapore Changi Airport. The local time is 9.06 pm and the temperature is 28 degrees Celsius.

For your safety and comfort, please remain seated with your seat belt fastened until the Fasten Seat Belt sign has been turned off.

Arlena found herself tuning out the standard inflight announcements as the plane taxied towards its gate. She was deep in thought about their last night together.

She had laid in bed silently, pretending to be asleep as he got up to go. The fading warmth of his body that was lying next to her just a short moment ago created a sudden tightening of her chest. She knew Alexei would go up, touch her, and make sure Vicky is okay. He will probably get into her bed and hold her. She closed her eyes and turned away, unable to stand the thought of Vicky in Alexei’s arms.

She had thought that she had come to terms with the fact that she had to share her love with her sister. But when it came down to it, she found herself unwilling to let go, to share.

She almost laughed at herself. She is the third wheel here, the fox, the mistress. A betrayer of her own wedding vows, a traitor to her blood ties, seducer of her sister’s husband. How dare she be jealous? How dare she demand her share of his love.

Perhaps it’s a blessing she needs to be back in Singapore for work. It would give her time to think, time to evaluate her feelings, to untangle all the ties that bind her. Felix, Vicky, Alexei. Wife, mistress, sister.

Everything.

It took him two days but he finally found an opportunity to corner her, alone, in the pantry. He swallowed as his throat became dry, struck by anxiety at the thought of what he was about to do. Then he stood up, and walked swiftly to the pantry, knowing from her previous routine that she would not take any longer waiting for her coffee to brew.

Looking at the hated back of the curvaceous woman in her tight herringbone skirt, he can’t help but feel a faint sense of arousal. She is lust personified. The richness of her flesh is corruption itself.

Steeling himself, seeking his courage, he took care to walk silently, stealthily before he whispered, “It was you in Vietnam, wasn’t it?”

“Huh? What? Whatever are you talking about?” She replied, with just the slightest pause.

Picking up her cup, she paused just before she left the pantry, “For the last time, I have no idea who or what you are talking about. If you ever try to harass me again, I will make sure your career here comes to an end.” she hissed.

Felix watched silently as May walked out of the pantry, sashaying her beautifully rounded ass seductively.

He had found the answer that he was seeking.

The older lady in beautifully cut grey suit pants hugged a fresher, younger version of herself as a raven-tressed beauty looked on. Her pearly white shoulders on display in her yellow maxi island dress. The girlish side of the older woman almost jumped with glee at the fulsome praises heaped upon her by the pretty young thing. Her cynical and world-weary side, on the other hand, simply observed the airhead before her.

“Lauren told me that you would like to be staying with us?”

“Yes, please! Pretty pretty, please! Will you allow it?” Arisa pleaded, fluttering her doe-like eyes outrageously.

“Oh, alright. Come with us, the two of you can share the same room.” May replied, unable to resist the twin assault of flattery and comical charm on display.

“Hurray!” Arisa shouted at her little victory, doing a childish dance of joy as she hugged her best friend. Lauren looked at her mum over the shoulder of Arisa, her helpless smile says it all, “What can I do?”

Chapter 84: Act Two - A Prelude Part 2

“I know what you did.”

That was the very first email.

Of course, they ignored it. It is bullshit after all. Junk emails are a dime a dozen, but then came the photos. Photographs of them drinking at public venues. Then entering and leaving their homes. Of the models, the pretty young things that enter their little world. Pretty young things that are sometimes not so pretty, and definitely no longer young once they were done with them.

Fuck.

They are made to know that they are being observed, that they knew of their every misdeed.

“XXX Hotel. 23 June. 8 pm. Do not be late.”

They went, of course. A discreet little place in a little corner of the little island. The deal was simple. Straightforward even. More drugs, more money. And in return? Some information about their sponsor. And their photos, videos and deeds never reach the wrong eyes.

It was a good deal. A fair deal. If they can be trusted. But they have no choice. The material they have on hand made it very clear that they are under constant surveillance. That any attempts to double-cross them would result in a very painful end for them. A short end if they are lucky. A long one if they are not.

Caught between a rock and a hard place, a very small rock and a very hard place, Ashley and Andre knew exactly what they had to do. With any luck, they will continue to keep their lives, and more importantly, maintain their current lifestyles.

There is a cabinet at May’s cubicle. It is located below her desk, on the right side. May keeps the key to that cabinet in her purse.

Open her purse, get the key and open that cabinet.

Inside that cabinet will be a digital safe. The passcode is: 912437

Once you open it, there will be a portable hard drive. Take it, and make a copy of its contents. I trust I do not have to tell you to return everything to its rightful place once you are done.

Inform me when you have succeeded. I will let you know what the next step is.

If I do not hear from you by next Wednesday, I’ll take it that you have failed.

“So now we wait?” Alexei asked, a faint rumbling of impatience in his voice.

“Da. Now we wait.”

Alexei looked at the impassive face of his security chief, his subordinate. Utterly loyal. Sigh. It is not in his nature to wait. In most operations, he often finds it best to attack, to take the initiative, to force the terms of engagement so the enemy will always have to react, so the enemy will always be on his back foot. This waiting, this, dangling of the bait is against his nature, his instincts from being an operative.

“Any news from NPVD?”

“Nyet. My sources say Directorate planning something. They don’t want rocking the boat.” Samsonov replied.

Strange. It is very unusual that the NPVD would fail to contact him when something big happens in this corner of the world. It was his fief after all, even after his ‘retirement’. Was warning him off their way of protecting him? No knowledge means no involvement after all, and he is free to protest his innocence if anything goes wrong.

Fuck. He hates politics and rising in the NPVD means politics. Dirty murky politics. That's why he took the out his father offered him. Dismissing Samsonov, Alexei returned to his quarters. Now that Arlena has gone home, he is able to focus all his attention on Vicky.

Perhaps it was guilt, but he had lavished her with tenderness, rocking her in his arms when she cried, plying her lips open and feeding her with his fingers when she refused food.

He had muttered meaningless things into her ear, comforting her to sleep, working with her psychiatrists and nurses to tweak her treatment plan and he could see it working. Slowly, but surely, his Vicky is coming back to him.

And still, he has no idea what to do about it when she has fully returned.

Chapter 85: Ready Player One Part 1

“Oi bro! Wanna makan?!”

At the loud voice, Felix almost jumped out of his skin. His nerves were already stretched to the max as he waited nervously for everyone to go for lunch and now this?

“Erh, haha... N-no no... I’m still r-rushing a report. M-maybe you can tabao for me?” He stammered quickly.

“Wah seh bro! It’s TGI Friday lah, chill man! No need to work so hard lah!” Fariz grinned, “You want to get promoted issit? Siah lah, power lah you, work less than one year and you want Uncle Wong’s position liao ah?”

“H-haha, h-hahaha... N-no lah... Just need to, y-you know, finish this report... B-Boss wants it urgently lah...” Felix stuttered as he put together a lie quickly.

“Aiyoh, please lah, chillax brother... You must learn to relak you know? Lepak abit lah... You want me tabao for you?” Fariz interjected.

“S-sure! Thanks man!” Felix replied, heaving a silent sigh of relief.

“Nasi padang ok bro?”

“Ok, I want beef rendang, vege curry... and one egg. PayNow you ok?”

“Steady lah bro,” Fariz waved with a smile as he walked away.

As he watched Fariz leave the office, Felix quickly sprang into action, anxious to get everything done and over with before May leaves Boss’s office. He was terrified that she would leave for lunch with her bag, but she was called into Boss’s office just before lunch, giving him a great opportunity. Still, she’s in there for almost 15 minutes now, surely she won’t be in there any longer, right?

Shit.

If he needs to do this, he’s got to do it fast. It’s now or never.

Felix shot up from his chair, almost tripping in his haste as he walked swiftly along the line of empty cubicles, carrying his laptop along with him. Admin…Admin… Ok, nice… No one... As he approached his destination, he turned his head to his left and right, looking around one more time to make sure he is alone before he ducked into May’s cubicle.

“Ok… Purse… right… Keys… Keys… Should be this one… Fuck!! Why so many!” He almost shouted aloud in frustration.

Shit… okaaayy… Calm down Felix… You can do this… He told himself.

Taking a deep breath to calm himself down, he resumed what he was there to do, “Now… Right cabinet… Right cabinet… Right cabinet… Okaayyy… Keys… Let’s try this… Fuck… Calm down Felix… Next key…” His fingers trembling as he fumbled with the keys, trying to be fast without jangling it and making noise. Finally, on his sixth attempt, he got it.

“YES!” Felix looked around guiltily, hoping no one heard his little cry of success. Seeing no one around, he went back to work, “Erm…. The code is… 912437… There...” Felix muttered softly under his breath as he struggled to get everything done in double-quick time.

“Okay… Hard-disk… hard-disk… Connect and copy… Shit... Why so much data? Four folders only why so big! Nabeh… Shitshitshitshitshit… Faster… Faster…” he panted as he connected the hard-disk to his laptop and began frantically copying.

3 minutes... 2 minutes... 1 minute... 23 seconds... Felix sweated the seconds away as he watched the fluttering numbers... Urging them on... Faster! Faster!

The moment he saw the green tick, he disconnected the USB, thrusting the hard disk back into the digital safe before he closed and locked the cabinet.

Just in time to find Kelly staring at him, an expression of shock and surprise on her face.
